class=\"translation-block\">The city of Le Puy was early on organized into districts grouping together merchants and craftsmen guilds. For example, there was the butchers' district, the shoemakers' and tanners' district, the blacksmiths' district\u2026 and the salt merchants' district, <strong>the saulniers<\/strong>. <br>This guild, which gained the monopoly on salt sales in Le Puy at the beginning of the 13th century, even gave their names to two streets: Saulnerie and Old Saulnerie. <br>For centuries, mule drivers transported salt from the Mediterranean salt marshes, where it was harvested, to Le Puy.
