The sale of salt in Le Puy, a long history…
The city of Le Puy was early on organized into districts grouping together merchants and craftsmen guilds. For example, there was the butchers' district, the shoemakers' and tanners' district, the blacksmiths' district… and the salt merchants' district, the saulniers.
This guild, which gained the monopoly on salt sales in Le Puy at the beginning of the 13th century, even gave their names to two streets: Saulnerie and Old Saulnerie.
For centuries, mule drivers transported salt from the Mediterranean salt marshes, where it was harvested, to Le Puy. There, they delivered it to the various "saulniers" in these two streets, who then sold it to the inhabitants of Le Puy.
The salt granary of Le Puy, a unique story
En 1558, décision est prise de mettre en place un grenier à sel commun pour que tous les habitants des rues Saulnerie et Saulnerie vieille soient approvisionnés équitablement.
C’est la maison où nous vous accueillons qui est choisie, idéalement placée en bas et à l’angle de ces deux rues pour faciliter les livraisons et donner accès à tous les marchands à ce sel.
Il s’agit d’un grenier à sel qu’on peut qualifier de « communautaire », car la gabelle, impôt royal sur le sel n’a jamais pu être mise en vigueur au Puy en raison du monopole ancien accordé aux saulniers Ponots.
Ce monopole sera attaqué à plusieurs reprises et pour le défendre de longues procédures ont été nécessaires. Plusieurs rois l’ont confirmé : Charles V en 1377, Louis XI en 1457, Louis XII en 1498, Henri II en 1548, Louis XV en 1733…
